The European Commission has just announced an agreement whereby English will be the official language of the European Union rather than German, which was the other possibility.

As part of the negotiations, the British Government conceded that English spelling had some room for improvement and has accepted a 5-year phase-in plan that would become known as “Euro-English”.

In the first year, “s” will replace the soft “c”. Sertainly, this will make the sivil servants jump with joy. The hard “c” will be dropped in favour of “k”. This should klear up konfusion, and keyboards kan have one less letter.

There will be growing publik enthusiasm in the sekond year when the troublesome “ph” will be replaced with “f”. This will make words like fotograf 20% shorter.

In the 3rd year, publik akseptanse of the new spelling kan be expekted to reach the stage where more komplikated changes are possible. Governments will enkourage the removal of double letters which have always ben a deterent to akurate speling. Also, al wil agre that the horibl mes of the silent “e” in the languag is disgrasful and it should go away.

By the 4th yer people wil be reseptiv to steps such as replasing “th” with “z” and “w” with “v”.

1787 – On this date, which is a Sunday, Alderman Exshaw, accompanied by Archdeacon Hastings, is walking in Merrion Square, Dublin, when he encounters ‘a great number of people, leaping, wrestling, shouting, etc.’. The archdeacon observes that this activity profanes the Sabbath and is a disgrace to Exshaw’s district. The latter orders the police to advance and disperse the crowd with fixed bayonets. The MPs Richard Griffith, Henry Hatton and Sir John Freke intervene, and Griffith asks Exshaw ‘to consider what he was about to do; that he had no right to order his men to fire without reading the Riot Act, and that if they fired, they must kill many innocent persons’. These words, according to Exshaw later, encourage the mob, and they immediately attack the police with stones. Exshaw will admit that there was no riot before he ordered the police to disperse the crowd, ‘that some of his men were drunk, but not so much so, he said as to render them incapable of doing their duty; that it was with great difficulty he prevented them from firing on the mob’. Griffith will be found guilty of instigating a riot, and considered lucky not to be hanged

On this date, John Allen (3rd Viscount Allen), former MP for Carysfort, kills a dragoon in a street brawl. ‘His Lordship was at a house in Eustace Street. At twelve in the night, three dragoons making a noise in the street, he threw up the window and threatening them, adding as is not unusual with him a great deal of bad language. The dragoons returned it. He went out to them loaded with a pistol. At the first snapping of it, it did not fire. This irritated the dragoon who cut his fingers with his sword, upon which Lord Allen shot him.’ The wound occasions a fever which causes Lord Allen’s death on 25 May

Dudley Cosby (Baron Sydney), former MP for Carrick, commits suicide: ‘Our domestic news is first the death of Lord Sydney occasioned by a dose of Danish poison. His lordship to render himself agreeable to his lady upon their marriage stopped two issues he had in his thighs but found no ill effects until the 13th inst. when, after a night of great exercise by dancing, his temper and reason as appears since, was in some sort affected; however, not so much as to make those about him immediately suspect it or the consequence. In my mid teenage years I discovered the game of poker when a priest , a nice man apparently full of fun and happiness , would come to stay at our house for the purpose of drinking his head off for about 7/8 days.He drank whiskey straight from the bottle and within a short time of his arrival had the need for a sort of permanent messenger boy to keep supply and demand in balance.Naturally a commision was due and paid for these endeavours.I soon realised that the commision had a direct relationship to the amount of whiskey comsumed and time of day these errands were accomplished.If other folks arrived as they did in those days multiple commisisons could be negotiated without any problem , everyone liked to chip in . Fr. Sam’s connection to our house was tenuous in that he had served on the mission’s with my mothers older brother who had been martyred in the Phillipines in 1954 and had played poker with him the night before his death .
Toward the end of a week and they were common enough I like Enron once was the richest guy in the room..and it was on one of these occasions he decided to teach me poker.
Later in life I would watch in London Casino’s poker games played by the same rules but the house taking a cut of each pot. Two and a half % redgarded as modest. So roughly 40 hands later, a blink of an eye in poker, all the money should be in the box under the table but that is not what happens. What happens is the pots get bigger and bigger with house getting more each time.What is also happening is that people have lost their shirts and other people who still have shirts have taken their place.
There incidentally began my interest in Economics as I witnessed fleets of limousines depositing wealthy Sheik’s and their entourage’s to these clubs.A seemingly endless stream of them. With just a wave of their hands stack after stacks of chips would appear. These mysterious white robed figures endlessly waved their hands. They controlled the spice we are all addicted to and so 40 yrs on and things haven’t changed, I lie ,we are more addicted than ever.
Improvement in world economies influences the price of the spice yet in the background business is as usual ,expand or die .Now when oil prices rise severley the effect is to take the cash money out of the game to be taken back to Saudi to be counted by the Emir’s men or in the case of Iran ‘The Regime’ , Hugo in Venezula and in Iraq probably by Uncle Sam before being returned to the people of Iraq in the way of bridges ,schools and hospitals built by companies like Haliburton and protected by Blackwater. If more players don’t sit down at the table quick enough the game is over.And thats what happened here the Central banks all over the world failed to print enough money to make up for what the increased spice price took out of the Global monetary system unlike the Casino’s who continue to serve plates of chips to the men who waved..so suddenly and without warning all the money is gone to Dubai and similar. There it will be ironed and lent back to us as new money so when the spice runs out, the interest on the loans will get bigger and they won’t need the money for the spice because all the money will belong to them.
As to the poker games with Fr.Sam ,I thrashed him again and again and on every visit. He was probably a very good poker player but after 5 or 6 days of heavy drinking he unknowingly thought out loud ”lets see I’ve got a pair of Aces I will raise and see what he makes of the that and then I’ll buy two cards ” and not very clearly at that, he also developed ‘tells’ extreme ‘tells’ if his left eye twitched he didn’t think much of his hand on the other hand if he clicked his denture he had at least three of a kind are two that I remember so that after a while I often knew what he had in his hand before he told me …………. And the mysterious white robed men don’t drink at all and still wave their hands. copyright 2010

How Fairy Liquid can save the Gulf .

Those of you that follow my twitter will know of course that Deepwater Horizon happens to be my obsession of the month .Up to now my experiments have been confined to the bathtub using sewing thread candle wax and tinfoil with the occasional drop of olive oil. Somehow I thought my efforts lacked any reality As the day was so gorgeous I sat on the deck for a long time after my 2nd visitor departed doing the staring thing …..suddenly I realized that I was looking at the very thing I needed to add a bit of reality to my process. A fire bucket which had not been used since the winter and when last used had not been emptied fully of ash so with added rainwater about a foot deep and 3” of ash at the bottom .My very own Gulf of Mexico.

The problem with the square dome overnight as I understand was ice crystals are forming on the square dome due to the very near freezing water at that depth, so far I have been unable to get Tony or Doug on the phone to confirm this but that’s what the media are saying. This is where the power of circular thinking came into play supposing the square dome wasn’t in nearly freezing water all presumably would be OK .Found a screw which I carefully placed in the middle to represent the wellhead ,I then rooted for and found a 2” x 4” plastic pipe that had been knocking about the studio and placed this in the ash at the bottom even tho it was a sunny day the bucket behind a chair was pretty cold so I had another coffee. A moment of clarity occurred while washing the dishes as I realised that Fairy Liquid was the answer ‘Fairy Liquid’ does not exist in the USA as far I know but I am talking about a brand of dish detergent ,soon I had reamed out the nozzle with a tin opener and inserted a straw, a drop of superglue later and I had my topside ready. I put the straw in the pipe and slowly squeezed the bottle and lo and behold was able to fill the pipe with Fairy Liquid which is fairly unfreezable being mainly a chemical called teepol. I did a bit of spooning and so forth to mimic currents etc., held together pretty well.
I then made the holes in my tinfoil round dome a bit bigger and lowered it down bit sluggish once it hit the Fairy Liquid but sank all the same. Obviously they will need a much bigger pipe or containment area to pump teepol or a similar fluid into large enough for the robots to scurry about and when they have finished suck it all out again .I didn’t go that far. The End is no longer nigh .This should work a green answer.And a great way to spend a sunny Sunday afternoon -(oo)-

I met a man from Cavan as last night I
crossed the square,
he once lived here for 20 years but now
resides elsewhere,
the sun was shining as we strolled and
spoke of this and that,
Of trees and bushes and of playing hide
and seek,
and the ease of finding children now
the park was bleak.

The speed of it was staggering,why just
the other week
had he spent an hour in this same place
his youngest niece to seek.
You could find them in a minute now, a
flourish as he spoke,
the gardeners and the diggers had taken
that green cloak.

We stopped again at the farther gate
for its that way I was bound
to drink a bottle with some friends was
my intention to be found.
He hinted there was darker news not yet
upon the ear.
Of how the folk inside the bank’s had
commission tier by tier
At ten per cent between five,divided
unequal clear.

Had it added to make housing very very
dear.
And now the boom was over some deals
had gone awry
The buyers of the elephants thought the
